Curl Must-Haves: The Professional Guide to Healthy, Defined Curls
Why Curly Hair Needs Its Own Product Routine
Curly and textured hair behaves differently from straight hair at a structural level. The spiral shape of each strand means natural oils from the scalp cannot travel easily to the ends, leaving the mid-lengths and tips prone to dryness and breakage. At the same time, the scalp can become congested when heavy products are applied without a proper cleansing routine.
After years of working with curly-haired clients in the salon, the most consistent finding is this: the right routine, using products formulated specifically for curly hair, makes a far greater difference than curl type alone. Whether your curls are loose waves or tight coils, the principles are the same.
How to Build a Curly Hair Routine That Delivers Results
A consistent, structured routine is the single most important factor in healthy curl care. Here is a straightforward framework that works across most curly hair types:
Shampoo: one to two times per week using a sulphate-free or mild cleansing formula
Conditioner: every wash day, applied from mid-length to ends only
Deep treatment or mask: once a week to restore moisture and elasticity
Leave-in conditioner or curl cream: applied to wet hair before diffusing or air drying
Styling product: curl gel or mousse to define and hold the curl pattern
Skipping steps, particularly the deep treatment, is the most common reason curls lose definition over time. Moisture lost through washing, heat, and environmental exposure needs to be actively replenished.
Choosing the Right Shampoo for Curly Hair
Not all shampoos are curl-friendly. Formulas containing harsh sulphates can strip the natural oils curly hair depends on, leading to increased frizz and breakage. Look for shampoos labelled sulphate-free, moisturising, or curl-specific.
If you use heavy styling products regularly, incorporate a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove build-up without disrupting your regular routine. Two products we consistently recommend for curly hair cleansing are:
Davines LOVE Curl Cleansing Cream 500ml - an all-in-one cleanser and conditioner that gently cleans while softening and defining curls in a single step.
Davroe CURLiCUE Cleansing Clay Shampoo 300ml - a low-foam formula with Kaolin Clay, Quinoa, and Kakadu Plum that detoxes the scalp and nourishes curls without stripping moisture.
Both options are free from harsh sulphates and are well-suited to curly, coily, and kinky hair types. A clean, balanced scalp is the foundation every curl routine builds on.
How to Condition Curly Hair Properly
Conditioner is non-negotiable for curly hair. Apply it generously from the mid-lengths to the ends, detangle gently with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, and leave it on for two to three minutes before rinsing. Never apply conditioner directly to the roots, as this contributes to a congested scalp and limp roots.
For very dry or coarse curl types, a co-wash (conditioner-only wash) between shampoo days can help maintain moisture without over-cleansing. Two conditioners that work particularly well for curly hair types are:
Kerastase Curl Manifesto Essential Hydrating Conditioner 250ml - infused with Manuka Honey and Ceramide, this lightweight formula detangles, adds body, and enhances curl bounce without weighing hair down.
Angel Rose Elastic Curl Conditioner 400ml - enriched with Rose Extract and repairing nutrients, this conditioner restores elasticity to enhance curl definition and keeps hair supple and bouncy.
How to Control Frizz on Curly Hair
Frizz is the most common concern we hear from curly-haired clients. It occurs when the hair cuticle lifts and absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, disrupting the curl pattern. In New Zealand and Australia, where humidity can be high year-round, this is an ongoing challenge.
The most effective approach is a layering technique applied to wet hair:
Start with a leave-in conditioner to seal the cuticle and provide a moisture base
Follow with a curl cream or butter to define the curl shape and reduce puffiness
Finish with a curl gel or mousse to lock in definition and provide humidity resistance
Once dry, apply a small amount of hair oil to smooth the surface and add shine - never on wet hair, as this can block moisture from entering the shaft
Moroccanoil, Oribe, and Kerastase are professional brands that deliver reliable frizz control without leaving curls feeling stiff or coated.
The key is using the right amount - too much product is just as problematic as too little. One product worth highlighting for this step is: Oribe Curl Control Silkening Creme 150ml - a silk-light creme with avocado, apricot, and coconut oils that delivers touchable curl definition with all-day frizz control and humidity resistance.
How to Restore and Maintain Curl Definition
Loss of curl definition is usually a sign of dehydration, product build-up, or damage from heat or chemical treatments. Before adjusting your styling products, it is worth addressing the condition of the hair itself.
1. Treatments That Support Curl Recovery
A protein treatment strengthens the hair structure and can help restore elasticity in over-processed or weakened curls. Follow it with a deep moisture mask to prevent the hair from becoming brittle. This protein-moisture balance is something many clients overlook, and it is one of the most impactful adjustments you can make to a curl routine.
Brands such as Joico, Milk Shake, and Kevin Murphy offer professional curl treatments available through HairPlus NZ that address both protein and moisture needs within a dedicated curl care range.

How often should I wash curly hair?
One to two times per week suits most curly hair types. Washing too often strips the natural oils curls need; washing too infrequently allows product and sebum to build up, which can cause itching and weigh curls down. If your scalp needs attention between washes, a gentle scalp tonic or a small amount of dry shampoo applied at the roots can extend the time between wash days without disrupting your curl pattern.
Why do my curls lose their shape by the second day?
Second-day curl collapse is usually caused by insufficient moisture during styling, or a styling product that does not provide enough hold for your curl type. Try applying products to wetter hair, using the praying hands method rather than scrunching, and sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase to preserve the curl shape overnight.
Is it necessary to use a diffuser on curly hair?
A diffuser is not essential, but it does produce more consistent results than air drying in most cases, particularly in cooler or humid conditions. Diffusing on a low heat and low speed setting helps set the curl pattern more evenly and reduces frizz compared to leaving curls to dry freely. If you air dry, avoid touching the hair until it is completely dry.
